MoRU

200603130910 I love finding apps that solve an annoyance that I’ve been trying to solve with other tools. The two annoyances that I’ve just found a solution for are:

  • My downloads folder, “InBox”, gets messy…real quick.
  • It’s hard for me to find things I need in my receipts folder.

Previous solutions to these problems were:

  • In my InBox, I have a “sorted” folder. When I’m done with an app I drop it in “sorted” and let FolderOrg put it in a dated folder. Every so often I just delete old folders.
  • My receipts are all named, yyyy_mm_dd_SomeRelevantName.pdf.

Both of these solutions were pretty good, but both got replaced when I stumbled into MoRU. MoRU is a UI in front of spotlight. At first it seemed a tad unnecessary, but then I realized how it can help me.

I created two new “Smart Groups”, one for “InBox” and the other for “Receipts”. InBox shows all files in my InBox directory. I have this sorted by “Last Modified Date” and I just delete old files as I please, right from within MoRU. I try to keep my InBox down to twenty files or less. My Receipts group is essentialy the same, but it’s showing me all PDFs from my iDisk’s Documents folder sorted by Last Modified Date. Now I no loner have to prefix my receipts, I just look at them in MoRU. Neither of these were problems that absolutely needed to be solved, but at $10 it seemed worth it.

I’m sure for most people MoRU can do a lot more, and I’m guessing in another couple weeks I’ll find new uses for it, but for now, it’s a great downloads and receipts organizer.

note 1: If you’re going to create a group that looks at your iDisk, you’ll really want to have your iDisk synchronized locally.
