Biphasic Sleep

My day is typically broken up into three distinct blocks of time. These include my day job, my family and then my time for roobasoft. The tricky part is finding enough time and minimizing overlap. Here’s what I’ve found that works for me:

1) Go to work.

2) Come home, eat with the family and spend time with them (all too often I’m in front of my PowerBook. Something I need to work on). Put the kids to sleep sometime between 8 and 8:30.

3) tired?

|______no) Work until you’re tired. Usually I’m tired before 11 p.m.

|______yes) Go to sleep.

at some point I wake up. I’ve trained myself to wake up between 2 and 4 a.m.

4) slept longer than 5 hours?

|_____no) Work until 5:30 and then go back to sleep

|_____yes) Work until it’s time to shower and go to my day job

Most of the time I do the sleep, wake up to work then sleep again. I’ve found that waking up twice is beneficial for me. Things are often clearer when I wake up (this isn’t true for everyone) so it’s handy to experience that twice a day.

When I start working from home full time I’ll be tempted to try polyphasic sleep, but with two small children it seems unwise. In reality, the whole idea seems unnatural, but hey, whatever works.
